A vote by the Australian senate means that from now on Australian permanent residents or citizens can sponsor their parents and dependent relatives to come to Australia (or sponsor a relative to care for them) if they have a long-term or permanent medical condition medical condition.

The visa’s, which may only be available from now and for a period of 6 months. These include:
- Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864);
- Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 884);
- Aged Dependent Relative Visa, Remaining Relative Visa;
- Carer Visa;
- Parent Visa and;
- The Aged Parent Visa
All of these are non-contributory visa types.
